Fisicaro said that traffic around the school has become hazardous and the parking situation is not good. Van Sciver is also the focus of some safety upgrades. The approximate cost is estimated at $3.5 million per school.
The classrooms would be added to the blacktop, adjacent to the playground at Strawbridge, and at Van Sciver, the classrooms would be added to an area near the blacktop as well. Steve Becica of Becica Associates said the referendum plan currently includes additions of three classrooms each for Strawbridge and Van Sciver elementary schools. Currently, kindergarten students can attend a full day of programming, but only half of the day is instructional and the other half is enrichment. The district is now eligible for state funding for preschool and adding those classrooms would give Haddon Township the space to do so while also implementing a full instructional day for kindergarten. classrooms with bathrooms, a key requirement by the state for early childhood education classrooms. To solve that problem, if the referendum is approved, the district would add a minimum of six 950 sq.
If Haddon Township implemented full-day instructional programming for kindergarten, there would not be any room left for preschool.
